Institute a lights-off policy where natural light is available

Only switching lights on when natural light is insufficient also means that less lights will be left switched on when areas become unoccupied.

How?
Staff can be encouraged to only switch lights on when required through existing channels such as staff inductions and newsletters. Reminder stickers placed near the light switches can help.
It is particularly important to have clear labelling for light switches to allow people to easily switch on only relevant lights.

How did we calculate this?
This example is based on a bank of 10 x 36W T8 fluorescent tubes (connected load 47W each) which only need to be switched on for half the time. The saving in this case would be:
10 x 0.047kW x 2,000 hours x 50% = 470 kWh per year. This equates to 644 kgCO2e per year.
This assumes typical business operating hours of 2,000 hours per year.

Cost to implement
No cost to implement, up to half a day to locate and stick notes on switches.
