Install 24-hour digital timers on drinks fridges

Timers can become energy-saving devices when used on high-energy-consuming appliances (such as drinks fridges) to turn them off at night and on weekends.

Why
Energy consuming appliances are often left on unnecessarily, consuming energy, costing money and increasing your carbon footprint.   By turning off a fridge during periods of inactivity, the doors are not opened; therefore they retain more cool air. Testing has shown that refrigerators only take 30 minutes to return to their optimal temperature once they are switched back on. This uses less energy than would have been used if left on.
A preliminary study conducted by the Moreland Energy Foundation has shown that each timer can save approximately $300 and up to 2.3 tonnes of carbon per annum.

How
24-hour timers can be purchased from hardware stores or electronics suppliers. Simply plug the timer into the power socket, set the time, and plug the appliance into the timer.  Remember to ensure you have only non-perishable items in your fridge when using a digital fridge timer.
