Incandescent PAR (parabolic aluminized reflector) lamps can be replaced by higher efficiency CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps).
Why?
Replacing a PAR38 120 Watt lamp with a 20 Watt CFL will reduce energy use by 80%; The PAR38 100W has a lifetime of 2,500 hours, compared to the 20W CFL which will last for 10,000 hours. This means you will also save money by replacing the lamps less frequently.
How?
The old lamps can simply be removed and replaced with the new ones.
Note that the number after PAR, for example, PAR38 refers to the lamp’s diameter, in this case 38 times 1/8th inch or 4.75 inches.
How did we calculate this?
Assuming the average SME has 10 PAR38 lamps of 120W each running for 2000 hours per year. 10 x (0.12-0.02) x 2000 x 1.37 = 2,740kg CO2e savings.
Cost to implement
$28 for each CFL compared to $14.20 for a 120W halogen lamp.
Alternatively, very efficient LED PAR38 lamps are available for about $35 each. These are simple to install and do not require specialised knowledge.
