Avoid organic waste going to landfill

Organic waste collection or a composting system may be effectively introduced into large and small businesses.

Why
When organic wastes breaks down in landfill it produces methane emissions which are 21 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2. As landfill levies increase, waste disposal costs also rise. Diverting organic waste from landfill may result in financial benefits, in addition to environmental benefits of reduced waste to landfill and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

How
Organic waste collection services can be arranged with various waste service providers. Bokashi bins can be used for smaller offices.

How we calculate this

Assuming a 20 litre Bokashi Bin is emptied every 4 weeks when at 80% capacity equalling 13 empties per year. Using the NGA factors for weight to volume, annually 25 kgs of waste can be diverted. 0.9kgs of CO2-e is produced for every kg of food waste. (25 X 0.9 X 3 years = 67.5kgCO2-e)
